What’s Your Brand?

What are you known for, and what do you want to be known for? What is your self-image, and what characteristics, personality traits, and values make you? Have you ever tested your Brand with a friend or colleague to get real honest feedback?

I did this a few years ago. I spent some real time thinking about who I was in the workplace and the values and characteristics I was aspiring to possess and represent. I re-wrote my Brand several times, fine-tuned the phrases and word choices, and thought I nailed it.

I went out on a limb, though, and asked a colleague for feedback on my Brand. Some things she agreed with, but there were other items that surprised her. I was a bit surprised that she was surprised, and wondered how could my own self image be off? And then the real feedback came – she shared with me those things for which I’m known that I didn’t even know I’m known for!

If you are considering a career change either inside or outside your current employer, defining your Brand can help you get clear on who you are and what you stand for. Your Brand gives you a framework so you can clearly articulate your strengths during interviews. Your Brand will help you assess job offers according to your values and Must Haves. And, being clear on your Brand raises self-esteem which will help you feel strong. And the Universe responds to you feeling good! Finally, don’t forget to test your Brand with a few friends and colleagues who will give you straight feedback, because that’s when the learning begins.
